Lake Matheson Sunrise Reflections

Lake Matheson must surely be one of the most iconic images of New Zealand. This tiny glacial lake, near Fox Glacier on the West Coast of the South Island, frequently boasts perfect reflections of NZ's two tallest mountains, Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman. A short walk of around one-and-a-half hours circles the lake, and there are several areas where you can stop to admire the view. It's extremely popular with both visitors and photographers.

When I was a young girl, my Nana had a biscuit tin with a picture of Lake Matheson on the lid. I can distinctly remember studying the picture and wishing I could go somewhere so beautiful. So, the first time I visited in 2005 (seven years after my Nana had passed away) it was quite an emotional experience. Despite the popularity, I still love this view. This is my favourite photo of Lake Matheson.... so far. It was a beautiful morning, with a twinge of colour in the sky, and some mist that came and went, at times completely obscuring the mountains from view, before disappearing again. You can't be unhappy on any day where you have perfect reflections and views to the mountains. However, I have not yet really had the conditions I would love here, and thus this location is high on my list to return to... soon! For now, this photo is still a favourite for me, due to the emotional attachment I have to this beautiful spot in New Zealand.
