Taranaki is on the West Coast of the North Island, and home to my favourite NZ mountain. The region is a major dairy farming region of New Zealand and built around the stunning lone mountain – a volcano that erupted last in the 1850s. Mt Taranaki not only dominates the landscape but is a location for hiking and skiing. New Plymouth is the main city in the region. Things to do in Taranaki include hiking around and on the mountain and in the Pouakai Ranges. There is also a long coastal walkway to take in the wild West Coast beaches, or, if you are feeling fit, you can climb to top of the prominent Paritutu Rock. Photographers love the Pouakai Tarn that perfectly reflects Mt Taranaki, especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.

Other attractions in the area include Dawson Falls and Wilkies Pools, Cape Egmont Lighthouse, the Te Rewa Rewa whale bone bridge and Back Beach near New Plymouth. North of New Plymouth is a beautiful area accessible only a low tide, Tongaporutu Beach. This beach is famous for its sea stacks "The Three Sisters". It's an ever-changing landscape that has never looked the same on any of my visits due to the constant coastal erosion.
