Rotorua is a geothermal part of New Zealand with fascinating areas of steaming ground, warm creeks and waterfalls that you can bathe in, and bubbling mud pools close to the city centres. Rotorua is notoriously famous for its sulphur smell when you arrive in the city, but you soon get used to it. As well as the geothermal drawcards, Rotorua is popular for its many lakes and nearby forests, most notably the Whakarewarewa Redwoods.

There are 20 lakes in the immediate Rotorua area, though some are tiny and difficult to access. These lakes are all of volcanic origin; filled craters or valleys blocked by ancient lava flows. Lake Tarawera is a favourite for my family, with us holidaying there for several years. A sunrise at a Lake Tarawera jetty is practically a New Zealand Must Do! There are hundreds of jetties to choose from and the lake is often protected from the wind that whips up Lake Rotorua. It's also an ideal spot for Milky Way photography on a clear winter night. The Te Whaiti-Nui-a-Toi Canyon in Whirinaki Forest Park is an absolute, unspoiled gem.
