Queenstown is one of the adventure playgrounds of New Zealand, with so many exciting options such as rafting, bungy jumping, luging and sky diving available to the thrill seeker. There are numerous day warks, from easy to challenging, beautiful scenic drives (lakeside to Glenorchy is not to be missed) and of course the local ski fields to check out. It's also a stunning area for photography, with the beautiful Lake Wakatipu and the backdrop of the iconic Remarkables mountain range.
Local sunrise and sunset photography options include the Queenstown Waterfront, Lake Hayes, Moke Lake and views from Queenstown Hill or Ben Lomond. The Skyline Gondola also makes for one of the best places to watch the sunset in Queenstown. Nearby there are also short day walks such as the Crichton Loop Track and to the lookout at Bobs Cove. A visit to Moke Lake is also well worth the effort.
Just a 40-minute drive away, Wanaka is a little quieter but equally as beautiful. I always feel like Wanaka has the best light for photography in all of New Zealand. In Wanaka you will find the famous "That Wanaka Tree" and beauties such as Rocky Lookout, Mou Waho Island, Glendhu Bay, Rob Roy Glacier in the Matukituki Valley and of course the amazing views from Roy's Peak. Wanaka is also the gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park and connects up with the West Coast via the Haast Pass.
