Also falling into the Mackenzie area, I seem to take so many photos of the majestic Aoraki/Mt Cook and surrounding areas that photos deserve their own section! The drive to Mt Cook is one of the most beautiful in New Zealand, and once you are in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park you will find a handful of the best day walks the country has to offer. The 5km walk to Hooker Lake for sunset is extremely popular and not to be missed, and seeing a sunrise at Tasman Lake with the glacier in the distance is a special experience.
Like nearby Tekapo, the star gazing around the Mt Cook area is next level. The dark skies are protected, and photos of the Milky Way rising over the mountains are amazing.
There are also several excellent adventures to be had in the area, such as a helicopter ride, glacier landing or glacier hike to see the ice caves. The Hooker and Tasman rivers flow to the astonishingly blue Lake Pukaki. When Mt Cook reflects in Lake Pukaki, the photographic results can be stunning. New Zealand's tallest mountain is an imposing and beautiful addition to photographs. This is another region I return to regularly, and it is not hard to see why!
