The Hawkes Bay is one of the warmest spots in the North Island, famous as a major wine growing region and for the beautiful art deco buildings along the foreshore in Napier. Sunrise from the Napier Beachfront can be a vibrant affair, staring straight out at the horizon. The waterfront is home to a number of interesting features – such as the Spirit of Napier fountain (a memorial after the major 1931 Napier earthquake), the Marine Parade viewing platform and the Pania of the Reef statue. Te Mata Peak is a favourite spot for mountain bikers and walkers in nearby Hastings.

The Wairarapa has several great spots for photography. Castlepoint near Masterton is a wild east coast beach that also has a safe estuary for swimming. The lighthouse is the focal point of the area, standing on the northern part of a large reef. Nearby the hike up Castle Rock is short and worthwhile as a vantage point to look over the beach. where you can look down over the Castlepoint Beach. At the bottom of the North Island is another picturesque lighthouse at Cape Palliser. Painted in red and white candy stripes, it takes a lovely photo at either sunrise or sunset. Also pictured is the Patuna Chasm, near Martinborough, which is a lovely adventure for the family.
